Energy Saving Tips

Hot Water Cylinder
One of the cheapest ways to reduce costs is to ensure that your hot water cylinder has a well fitting and thick jacket. A cylinder thermostat is also a good idea, with the maximum temperature set at 60°C.

Light Bulbs
Changing your light bulbs to energy saving lamps is very simple. The initial costs may seem  slightly high but the money saved over a few years can soon add up. Costs have come down recently.

Boiler
If you are replacing your boiler, a good quality condensing boiler should be used. However, even with your current boiler, you should ensure that the settings are being used correctly and efficiently. This can be helped with a room thermostat and TRVs fitted to your radiators.

Loft Insulation
Loft insulation is something that many people can fit themselves. Even if you have some insulation in your loft, as many older properties may have, it would be a good idea to add more. 300mm in total is recommended.

Electrical Appliances

Always switch off electrical appliances as opposed to leaving them on standby.

As no two properties are the same, it is impossible to quantify how much can be saved but the above will certainly help to reduce your energy bills.

It is important to remember that many people can obtain financial assistance through grants and improvements can sometimes be carried out for free through government initiatives.
